Julen Lopetegui has been named the new head coach of Qatar’s national football team. The 58-year-old Spaniard has signed a two-year contract that will last until 2027, according to the country’s football association. He succeeds fellow Spaniard Luis García in this role.
Upcoming Matches
Lopetegui is set to make his debut during the World Cup qualifying match against Iran on June 5, with an away game against Uzbekistan scheduled five days later. He aims to guide the Qatari team, which recently suffered a 3-1 defeat to Kyrgyzstan, to qualify for the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico after a disappointing qualification campaign.
Coaching Background
Previously, Lopetegui managed West Ham United in the English Premier League but left the position earlier this year after less than six months. He has also coached Wolverhampton and Sevilla, where he led the team to victory in the Europa League.
Challenges as Spain’s Former Coach
Lopetegui has experience as a national team coach as well. He was in charge of Spain but was dismissed by the Spanish Football Federation just two days before the start of the 2018 World Cup in Russia due to negotiations with Real Madrid that he did not inform the federation about. His tenure at Real Madrid ended abruptly after just 14 competitive matches.
