Leon Goretzka is back in the fold. After being sidelined for 16 months by coach Julian Nagelsmann, the 30-year-old midfielder has made a remarkable comeback as a key player for FC Bayern and has now been reintegrated into the national football team by the national coach.
Goretzka’s return comes ahead of the Nations League quarterfinal match against Italy in Milan on Thursday at 20:45 (local time). Based on his performances during the preparations in Dortmund, it wouldn’t be surprising if Goretzka, wearing the number 8 jersey, finds himself in the starting lineup for the match.
“Goretzka Fits Very Well”
As Nagelsmann assessed the current form of potential midfield candidates, he stated, “Leon fits very well into the idea we want to implement.” By the end of 2023, the national coach had found no suitable role for Goretzka, a confident and vocal leader, ahead of the home European Championship in 2024. Following a 0:2 defeat against Austria in which Goretzka played his 57th and, until now, last match for the national team, Nagelsmann made a decisive cut.
This decision was painful for Goretzka, who faced public scrutiny. Compounding his struggles, he also found himself sidelined at Bayern under coach Thomas Tuchel. However, Goretzka exhibited resilience.
Völler: Performance Must Be Rewarded
His determination to fight back at Bayern impressed both Nagelsmann and DFB officials. “In the end, performance must be rewarded. Leon has done exceptionally well in recent games,” remarked sports director Rudi Völler pragmatically.
Nagelsmann recognized the need for a strong Goretzka in his midfield as they aim to reach the Final Four of the Nations League. If Goretzka continues to deliver, he could even have a shot at participating in the 2026 World Cup.
Goretzka Wears the DFB Jersey with Pride
“It’s no secret that I have taken great pride in every one of my international matches and, of course, I hope to add more,” Goretzka said prior to receiving Nagelsmann’s call.
Both men had to navigate their complicated relationship and reported having a “good conversation,” finding common ground. In the fast-paced world of football, such reconciliations are possible. Goretzka feels a sense of satisfaction as he has overcome obstacles at Bayern and fought his way back into the national squad.
Nagelsmann Notes Goretzka’s Development
Nagelsmann pointed out a changed Goretzka, stating, “Leon has developed well in several respects. He has endured a tough phase at Bayern and with the national team, but he has fought his way through.” On the pitch, he has also found “a good balance between offensive threat and solid positioning in build-up play.”
“Leon Can Assess Situations Well”
The national coach emphasized that he and Goretzka had established a good rapport during their time together at Bayern. The previous exclusion? Water under the bridge!
The new shared goals bring them together again: “Leon is a clever player who can assess situations well, and he shares my interest in achieving success with the national team. He will deliver good performances for us,” Nagelsmann stated, looking forward to the upcoming matches against Italy.
