The VfL Wolfsburg women’s football team has successfully claimed second place in the Bundesliga, guaranteeing their participation in the Champions League next season. The team from Lower Saxony won their final match at home against Bayer Leverkusen with a comfortable score of 3:1 (3:0), thereby defending their runner-up position behind FC Bayern.
If Wolfsburg had faltered, Eintracht Frankfurt, which won 2:0 (0:0) against Leipzig, could have overtaken them in the standings, securing a direct ticket to the prestigious tournament. Instead, the team from Hesse will participate in the Champions League qualification.
Wolfsburg showcased their determination to retain second place by scoring three goals within the first fifteen minutes of the match. This season marks the first time since 2011/12 that the once-dominant German football club concludes a season without a national or international title. However, there was a personal accolade: VfL forward Lineth Beerensteyn was crowned top scorer with 16 goals, despite missing the match against Leverkusen due to injury.
Trophy Presentation and Coach Farewell in Munich
In contrast, their perennial rivals, FC Bayern, achieved their first double, winning both the league title and the DFB Cup, and celebrated their triumph at their home stadium. In front of national coach Christian Wück, the Bayern women, who had already secured the championship, won their final match of the season with a score of 3:0 (2:0) against SGS Essen.
Following the match, the players of departing coach Alexander Straus were presented with the championship trophy, mirroring the celebration held for their male counterparts the previous evening. The Bayern women have now secured their third consecutive league title.
However, their performance in the Champions League fell short once again as they exited in the quarter-finals against Olympique Lyon. The Munich team aims to compete for the title in the prestigious tournament next year.
