The FC Bayern Munich appears to be a step closer to acquiring their costly target, Florian Wirtz. According to a report by Bild, the German football record champions have reached an agreement with the Bayer Leverkusen national player for a shared future. The 22-year-old has expressed a desire to move only to the Munich club.
Transfer Negotiations Pending
Now, Bayern must negotiate a transfer agreement with Wirtz’s current club, Bayer Leverkusen; discussions have not yet taken place. Wirtz has a contract with Leverkusen until 2027, and speculation suggests that Bayer is seeking €150 million for the player. Bild reports that Bayern aims to offer €100 million this summer. If that offer is insufficient, Wirtz may wait until 2026, when a departure is likely, allowing Leverkusen to still receive a transfer fee.
Official Reactions and Future Plans
There have been no official responses regarding the news as of yet. Wirtz is highly desired by Bayern Munich this summer. Supervisory board members Uli Hoeneß and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge have expressed admiration for the Leverkusen player. The club hierarchy and many Bayern fans hope to see Wirtz play alongside his national team colleague, Jamal Musiala, who is considered a significant prospect for German football. In Munich, Wirtz wishes to move into a salary bracket similar to Musiala, who extended his contract until 2030 this year.
Eberl’s Cautious Stance
When asked about the reports concerning Wirtz’s potential transfer, Bayern’s sports executive, Max Eberl, stated that he is not following the rumors closely. He mentioned that the topic has been prevalent in the media for a long time, adding, „We will fulfill our responsibilities, have ideas and thoughts. We will see what can be implemented and realized. Then we will look at how the squad appears for the Club World Cup and in the new season.“
Wirtz’s Future Aspirations
In Leverkusen, there was also a cautious approach initially. Coach Xabi Alonso, who will leave the club after this season, commented on Wirtz’s potential move to Bayern: „That is not my information. I spoke with Flo about our game, but we did not discuss the future.“
Wirtz himself hinted earlier this week in an interview that he does not plan to stay in Leverkusen indefinitely. „I am definitely tempted to eventually leave my comfort zone and experience something new,“ he told Sports Illustrated. „I know the football locker rooms well enough and believe I could quickly fit in anywhere.“
Declining Offers from Other Clubs
He stressed that he has „great respect“ for teammates who leave their families and surroundings for their careers. „I am quite lucky that I have many excellent clubs right at my doorstep and can now play at one of the best clubs in Germany and Europe,“ Wirtz stated. The young star previously decided not to join top clubs like Manchester City or Real Madrid but to pursue a move to Bayern.
