The defending champions SG Flensburg-Handewitt will take on Bundesliga rivals MT Melsungen in the semifinals of the Handball European League. Meanwhile, THW Kiel will compete against the French team Montpellier HB. This was determined during the Final Four draw held by the European Handball Federation (EHF) in Vienna. The final matches are scheduled to take place on May 24 and 25 in Hamburg.
Three former Champions League winners—Flensburg, Kiel, and Montpellier—have secured their spots in the Hanseatic city. For Melsungen, reaching the Final Four marks the greatest international achievement in the club’s history in this, the second most important European cup competition.
Potential 113th Derby Between Flensburg and Kiel
If both SG Flensburg and THW Kiel succeed in their semifinal matches, they will face each other in the final, marking the 113th Schleswig-Holstein derby between the two clubs. However, Flensburg has struggled against Melsungen this season, having lost two out of three matches. In contrast, Kiel has a favorable track record against Montpellier, with nine wins and three losses in a total of twelve encounters. The last time the northern Germans faced the French side, they eliminated them in the quarterfinals of the Champions League last year.
